Certainly that is true of skiing competition where the demands on equipment and the performance pressure on athletes are tremendous — and not just on elite skiers, but increasingly on participants at every skill level. In preparing for competition, every detail is important. Equipment is thoroughly tested and race preparation focuses on local factors (weather conditions, slope, quality of snow on the course, and so forth). Traditionally, development and testing of materials or equipment has been based on repeated measurements with resources including timing cells or wind tunnels. Similarly, the analysis of athletes’ performance has relied on techniques such as measuring race segments (chronometry) and video recordings. These methods, however, appear vulnerable to changing meteorological conditions and the difficulty of replicating the posture and movements of test subjects from one trial to the next due to such factors as improved performance stemming from cumulative experience in the trials or decreased performance due to fatigue. Furthermore, chronometry has a discrete character while researchers, coaches, and athletes are interested in observing certain phenomena continuously. Therefore, new methods are being sought that offer precise measurements during trials and subsequent evaluation of positions, velocities, accelerations, and forces. Kinetic analysis of ski turns based on measured ground reaction forces.

The objective of this study was to devise a method of kinetic analysis of the ground reaction force that enables the durations and magnitudes of forces acting during the individual phases of ski turns to be described exactly. The method is based on a theoretical analysis of physical forces acting during the ski turn. Two elementary phases were defined: (1) preparing to turn (initiation) and (2)...

The velocity and energy profiles of elite cross-country skiers executing downhill turns with different radii.

This study examined the influence of turn radius on velocity and energy profiles when skidding and step turning during more and less effective downhill turns while cross-country skiing. Thirteen elite female cross-country skiers performed single turns with a 9- or 12-m radius using the skidding technique and a 12- or 15-m radius with step turning. Mechanical parameters were monitored using a re...

A turning point analysis of the ergodic dynamics of iterative maps

The dynamics of one dimensional iterative maps in the regime of fully developed chaos is studied in detail. Motivated by the observation of dynamical structures around the unstable fixed point we introduce the geometrical concept of a turning point which represents a local minimum or maximum of the trajectory. Following we investigate the highly organized and structured distribution of turning ...

Mechanics of turning and jumping and skier speed are associated with injury risk in men's World Cup alpine skiing: a comparison between the competition disciplines.

BACKGROUND/AIM In alpine ski racing, there is limited information about skiers' mechanical characteristics and their relation to injury risk, in particular for World Cup (WC) competitions. Hence, current findings from epidemiological and qualitative research cannot be linked to skiers' mechanics. This study was undertaken to investigate whether recently reported differences in numbers of injuri...

A Geometric Framework for Detection of Critical Points in a Trajectory Using Convex Hulls

Large volumes of trajectory-based data require development of appropriate data manipulation mechanisms that will offer efficient computational solutions. In particular, identification of meaningful geometric points of such trajectories is still an open research issue. Detection of these critical points implies to identify self-intersecting, turning and curvature points so that specific geometri...
